POISONOUS PLANTS

It's that time of year again.  Lawnmowers are heard throughout the neighborhood, gardens are being planted, flowerbeds are being nurtured, and yards are being treated with fertilizers and weed control.  Those with youngsters exercise caution and keep them out of harm's way, but did you know that your plants and fertilizers could be poisonous to your pet?

It's true--that beautiful lily you just planted could kill your cat.  And the lovely apple tree that's finally mature enough to produce fruit, well the sees contain cyanide!  Certainly an adult wouldn't eat them, but your pet will eat the apple-seed and all.

Shocked?  There's more.  Your vegetable garden could be dangerous to your pet if they ingest the wrong plant.  Tomato plants and stern, rhubarb leaves, potato tubers and sprouts could all cause serious damage to your furry companion.

Lily-of-the-valley, rhododendron, azalea, and foxglove can all affect your pet's heart should they decide to take a nibble.  Mushrooms can cause liver failure and castor beans can cause death.

If you suspect your pet has ingested a poisonous plant, contact your veterinarian immediately. Symptoms can include lethargy, vomiting, and lack of appetite.  You can also visit the ASPCA animal poison control center website or call 1-888-332-3651.

There are many plants that are poisonous to your pet and knowledge is power.  If you are unsure of what a particular plant is, take part of it to your local nursery for identification.  Understanding what these plants are and either keeping your animal out of the area or removing the plant are sure ways to prevent a catastrophe.  If you just used fertilizer or pesticides, make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions telling you how long to keep you pet indoors.

It's a beautiful time of year and your pets, like most children and adults, want to be outside when the weather is nice. Is it safe?  It can be with a little extra precaution and knowledge.
